Dr. Joseph John Kavolus, MD, MSCR

I am so happy and thankful for finding Dr. Kavolus. He is one of the BEST, most professional Orthopedic Surgeons you can comfortably trust as you go through the pain and anxiety you are experiencing before/during/after the trauma of your surgery. I’m a 41yr old former runner who ran 6 marathons and developed severe Osteoarthritis in both hips. Dr. Kavolus replaced my right hip this past February at his Lighthouse Surgical site in New Hampshire and my left hip last month at Newton Wellesley Hospital. I’m now experiencing the least pain I’ve felt in years and my Alignment is better than I can ever remember- Thanks to Dr. Kavolus‘s Team at Newton Wellesley Hospital and at his Lighthouse site!

I have been a patient of NWH for 30 years. Have had multiple surgeries. All went well until 10/2/23. The date of my hip surgery I was rushed to the hospital due to a scheduling error by Dr. Kavolus staff. The Dr was agitated upon my arrival, did not greet me, did not apologize for his staff, simply marked my hip and left stating "now I'm going to yell at my office." I shared that I was in neck pain in addition to the hip, he asked "do you want to cancel the surgery?" . presumably so he could get his surgery schedule back on track for the day. he did not circle back to me post surgery, left conflicting medication orders for the nurses then was angry and defensive on a follow up call to me.

I came to Dr Kavolus with a severe infection from a hip replacement(from a different surgeon) 4 weeks earlier and he went above and beyond to do everything to help me! He ended up having to do a full washout and revision of the whole original hip replacement (changing the implant). I could not be more pleased with the outcome. The kindness, meticulousness, knowledge and attentiveness of him and his team thru these very stressful procedures was nothing but great! I’m 4 weeks out and already walking on my own! He is highly recommended!!

Dr. Kavolus did my hip replacement and the experience seemed great, until it dislocated three different times! He did NOT listen to me when I went to him with concerns three months after surgery that something in the hip was slipping. When I dislocated for the first time a month later, he tried to blame it on my anatomy and not his own incompetence. Even gave me all kinds of medical journal write-ups about what he claimed caused the hip surgery to be done incorrectly. I went for second, third, fourth, and fifth opinions after the second dislocation, and, even his fellowship mentor disagreed with this explanation of the problem. Kavolus became very defensive and unkind when I chose a different surgeon to do a revision on the hip. The charm, friendliness, and caring was a sham. Please save yourself the pain and harm of dislocations and chose a different surgeon

This was a total knee replacement postoperative visit. I was seen on time. Dr Kavolus examined my knee,. He had images from the just taken X-rays on display. I had a lot of questions about what activities etc I could engage in as well as some concerns over elements of healing. He listened carefully and answered my questions. I was especially pleased that he answered my questions about the pace and substance of re-introducing physical activity.

From the moment I met Dr. Kavolus, he reassured me that he could do my hip replacement surgery as soon as I was ready. Several other doctors had refused for over 5 years. Dr. Kavolus explained everything in detail and answered all my questions. I knew it would not be as painful as the knee replacements I had years ago, but was truly shocked at the lack of pain when I woke up after the hip replacement. He and his assistant checked on me daily and I was home the second day after surgery. For the first time in 10 years, I have absolutely no pain in my left hip or leg. Prior to surgery he made sure I kept a high protein diet and took many precautions to prevent any infections, one of his major goals. He is professional and personable and knows what he's doing!

Dr. Kavolus was recommended to me by another doctor who had done surgery on my right shoulder. After meeting with Dr. Kavolus and listening to his explanation of what he was going to do and why. He told me what to expect after surgery. I was so impressed with him that I knew he was the one I wanted to perform the surgery to replace my right hip. The surgery went just as planned with no complications. I started my physical therapy and after two weeks of home p.t. the p.t. therapist could not believe how well I was doing. I contributed this all to Dr. Kavolus. After one month and walking one mile a day with no pain, I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great orthopedic surgeon.

After a long search to find a knee replacement revision doctor I was VERY lucky to find Dr. Kavolus! He was not only able to address the problem but he was SO empathetic to my frustration! He is smart, patient and very personable with a way to explain the problem as well as put you at ease in a non rushed visit! I am so happy to recommend him to anyone who needs an orthopedic surgeon! My husband and I are thrilled to have found him!! He is truly a wonderful doctor!!!

Dr. Kavolus puts you at ease immediately. He is professional, kind and approachable. You do not feel rushed as he takes the time to listen and answer all your concerns.I would highly reccomend Dr. Kavolus.

Highly skilled, brilliant, professional, attentive and very personable. He sincerly cares. My pain was instanly gone. Walked up stairs one leg at a time after the first day and VHN PT was extrememly impressed. No stiches or staples and a small scar that healed quickly. What I have learned that is a very important part of a hip replacement is how the doctor places all the muscles back together and Dr. Kovolus does that with care and has that down pat. Thank you Sir.
