Dr. Brett Lyndon Smith, DO

I am shocked at some of the reviews posted here. I have been doing Dr. Smith for years and he has never been dismissive of any issues I have had. I have seen many doctors and have left feeling completely crazy because my pain seems to move between different joints. Dr. Smith has taken more time to both listen to me, and explain my condition than anyone I have ever seen before. He is very knowledgeable about various treatment options and worked persistently to help me find the best one for me. I feel lucky to see Dr Smith and am more than willing to drive over 30 minutes to do so as he is one of the most thorough physicians I have seen. The poor reviews on this page do not seem true to the experience I have had over time. One posted review complained that he mentioned adult coloring books as a way to reduce stress. All that indicates to me is that he is caring and looking at the whole individual and not just the symptoms someone is presenting in that moment. I feel sure that he explains to many of his patients, myself included, the role stress can play in many of the conditions he is treating. I believe the fact that he is looking at lifestyle as well as medical treatments makes him a more skillful clinician. Too many doctors do not take the same time to listen as Dr Smith and simply try to medicate a problem away, which perhaps is what that specific patient was expecting. Fortunately Dr Smith is a better doctor than that.

I have been seeing Dr. Smith for years and he has always taken the time to sit and listen to me. Very knowledgeable and open to suggestions.

I recently saw Dr. Smith and felt very dismissed. I was diagnosed with several autoimmune disorders several years ago and he tells me since my bloodwork came normal that I have something called, “Amplified Pain Syndrome” and he told me everything I told he was checking off for that basically. He put me in a box and completely dismissed my story. I feel very hurt and I almost don’t want to see another specialist because of this experience.

He ordered blood tests but sent me away before they were performed with a page about fibromyalgia (which is not what I have, I don't fit the symptoms), so he had his mind made up already. Then I received a letter saying the test results are normal, he's going with the fibro diagnosis, farewell and good luck. They didn't even spell my name right. Nine months later I go to an orthopedist for a hand injury and learn I have the ulnar drift and joint degradation of someone far older. Strong symptoms-along with others- of rheumatoid arthritis. I'm now being referred to a competent rheumatologist who will do more than merely tick a few boxes and give up. After I left a message with Brett Smith's office regarding this, I have not received even the courtesy of a response. I might have been spared two foot surgeries, a hand injury and further physical degradation if he wasn't so set on dismissing me and sending me flying out the door.

I was diagnosed with RA 15 years ago and have seen Dr. Smith for the last 5 years. He listens, is open to suggestions, and has always been supportive of my pain. As long as he is in Maryville I will continue to see him.

Dr. Smith is very knowledgeable and helpful. He got me in quick and figured out what was going on when 2 other doctors had it wrong. Highly recommend him and would trust anyone to his care.

Dr Smith is very qualified in his field, quick to identify solutions. He listens well and is a caring doctor. His office staff is also very professional and efficient. I highly recommend him.

I have been diagnosed with RA for the past 14 years. Dr. Smith is easy to work with, he listens, and open to new ideas. I would recommend him to anyone battling this disease.

Dr. Smith was dismissive of my symptoms and suggested that I have fibromyalgia/stress/it was all in my head. I had been trying to find a diagnose after falling ill one day and never recovering (it had been two years with no recovery at that point)- I teared up when he said fibromyalgia, because I felt like he was dismissing what I was saying and he said, “you’re going to need to learn to get a grip” (in response to me tearing up). He also suggested trying adult coloring books. I can second what another reviewer said, “ He over emphasized that he didn't believe in treating with medication and made me feel like he viewed me as someone trying to get narcotics”. My husband and I were both shocked at how incredibly rude Dr. Smith was. I was so disheartened after this appointment that I almost gave up on finding a cause for my symptoms. Luckily, I was able to find an excellent team of doctors who took me seriously and were patient enough to keep looking until they figured it out. I was diagnosed with POTS and Ehlers Danlos and have been managing symptoms. I really debated whether or not I would write a review, but I do not want any other women (or men) to have this experience.

Was dismissive of my symptoms, medical history, and Lab work. Suggested that I have fibromyalgia despite labs which indicate otherwise. He rushed through my appointment spouting off statistics and facts. In fact he spoke so quickly that at times I had trouble understanding what he was saying. He over emphasized that he didn't believe in treating with medication and made me feel like he viewed me as someone trying to get narcotics. I will just go ahead and drive an hour and a half away to see an actual rheumatologist who will take my health seriously.

Good Doctor, and was very helpful with information for my arthritis. I would recommend him to anyone!

Good doctor, took his time and really listens to his patients

The only positive thing I have to say about Dr. Smith and my experience is the speed with which I was able to get an appointment. He did not review my records (more than 100 pages from previous Rheumatologist sent) and wasn't at a prepared for my appointment. He negated my previous diagnosis' and refused to continue treatment. He didn't listen to my history or current concerns. It seemed as though he had the attitude if he didn't diagnose it himself, I didn't have the condition. Anyine with inflammatory arthritis knows you have days where swelling isn't present and I just happened to be having one of those days when I saw him. He was arrogant and dismissive. I would not recommend him to anyone.
