Alexander Walters MD, is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who specializes in medical and surgical care of the eye. He treats a wide variety of eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. His special areas of interest include advanced cataract surgery with multi-focal and astigmatism correcting intraocular lens implants to help decrease dependence on glasses, as well as custom minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), and treatment of dry eyes. Dr. Walters grew up in Hayesville, NC, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies. After one year of residency in internal medicine at Legacy Medical Center, he completed his surgical ophthalmology residency at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, OR, one of the top 10 training programs in the United States. Dr. Walters has
published research in multiple areas of ophthalmology including pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, retina, and inflammatory eye conditions, and has won multiple teaching awards. Dr. Walters joined Asheville Eye Associates in the fall of 2022. Dr. Walters and his wife, Hannah, have one daughter. They enjoy spending time outdoors with family, hiking in beautiful Western North Carolina, gardening, biking, traveling, and listening to bluegrass.
