Dr. Sternberg performed my colonectomy with permanent ileostomy placement. He was respectful and took the time to educate my husband and I about our options and what to expect afterwards. He was always professional and very knowledgeable. I love 3.5 hours away, but I recommend him to anyone I talk to who is facing possible GI surgery. My procedure was 12 years ago and have not had any complications at all.

My experience with Dr Sternberg has been excellent! I had 2 failed surgeries for pilonidal disease and was left with an open wound for several months. Dr. Sternberg was very thorough in his assessment of the infection at the wound site before the operation. His assistant (Andrea) was really patient and supportive in helping me plan comprehensively for an out-of-state surgery and was a major reason for such an overall excellent experience. I knew exactly what was going to happen at each step of the procedure and during post-care. I stopped experiencing any pain at the surgery site, just within the first week after the surgery. Dr. Sternberg truly cares about curing his patients and his team has been super-responsive for all the questions I had even after the surgery. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who has suffered with this issue like I have and who has had failed procedures in the past.

After struggling with Pilonidal disease for over two years and going through one failed surgery, Dr. Sternberg saved me from all of this. My original doctor had recommended repeating the original, failed surgery that I had. Discouraged, I looked elsewhere for care. It was an amazing decision! A month and a half out from my cleft lift procedure, I feel great. I'm pain-free for the first time in years.

Dr. Sternberg is wonderful!!!! He is an excellent surgeon with the highest credentials, tremendous experience with pilonidal disease, and a heart of gold for his patients. My son has suffered from pilonidal disease for 6 1/2 years and had 4 previous failed surgeries. Three different surgeons (one operated on him 2x) insisted that the only means of healing a "pilonidal cyst" was open excision. They collectively removed increasing amounts of internal gluteal tissue and each surgery took months to heal from, would never remain healed, and the surgeons' responses were always that "the tract must not have been completely removed" so they needed to go back in and remove more tissue. We finally began searching for an expert surgeon for pilonidal disease anywhere in the United States. We would have traveled anywhere in the world. Through internet searching we found Dr. Sternberg and learned about the cleft lift procedure which has a higher than 97% cure rate with the first surgery. We decided to travel more than 2000 miles for Dr. Sternberg to operate on our son because of his credentials, his success with pilonidal disease over many years, and after discussing my son's medical history with him via the internet and over the phone. We had an appointment in his office the day before the surgery, talked with him both before and after the surgery the day of, and had another office appointment the day after surgery because he knew we would be very far away and he wanted to be sure that our son was doing well. He even called the evening of the surgery at our hotel to make sure that our son was doing well. In complete contrast to our experience with the other 3 surgeon's, Dr. Sternberg gave us detailed information on his website and in person on exactly what the cleft lift procedure is, why it is successful, why the open excision is not, and included pictures on his website of after-surgery patients' buttocks so that my son knew what he would look like post-surgery. Dr. Sternberg also made sure that we understood how to carry out our part of wound care - NONE of our other surgeons ever did this. He showed us a video of caring for the wound drain before surgery, had his nurse demonstrate it on our son after surgery, had a laminated card to look at to better understand the position of the drain in the wound, and demonstrated again at his office the next day. Another video of caring for the wound drain is on his website in case you need further instruction, and I did. Because this was my son's 5th surgery and we would be so far away, this was extremely important for us to be sure that we knew how to care for our son's recovering wound. I can not recommend this surgeon highly enough. Was it worth the cost of flights and hotel? YES!!!!! It is not just about the cost of 4 other surgeries, professional wound care centers, emergency room visits to lance abscesses, laser hair treatments (yes, a previous surgeon had us do that too) but the cost of the years that my son could not play intramural sports in college or swim because of open, draining, painful wounds that were caused by failed surgeries, and the embarrassment of a wound that constantly stained clothing and that none of his friends, peers or co-workers really understood. Traveling from the East to the West Coast for Dr. Sternberg was the best decision that we have made and we are only sorry that we didn't do it sooner. Dr. Sternberg is an excellent surgeon. He is very knowledgeable, patient and very caring. He has excellent bedside manners, and is not one that rushes out as soon as he's done talking with you. He takes time to ask how you're feeling and if there was anything that concerns you.
