Dr. John David Mitchell, MD

After a consult for cataract surgery with another practice / doctor, where I thought the doctor's assessment was hurried, followed by a hard sell for laser surgery (and based on a family recommendation), I scheduled a consult with Dr. Mitchell. I could not have been more pleased. Dr. Mitchell was thorough in his evaluation, taking time to explain the surgery and lens options and answering all my questions. He then performed the cataract surgeries, implanting IOLs that gave me full range of vision (near, intermediate, and distance). I'm thrilled with the results. During my 30-day follow-up appointment yesterday, Dr. Mitchell was again generous with his time, conducting a thorough evaluation, explaining what I might expect in the next 4-5 years, and answering all my questions. I strongly recommend Dr. Mitchell for any ophthalmology care. P.S. My thanks to Samira and Erik, the practice's front desk staff. They were professional, friendly, helpful and efficient in helping me throughout the process.

My consultation with Dr. Mitchell this week for cataract surgery was very informative regarding the procedure and what IOL's to choose. His staff members were so helpful and friendly. I will be thanking my optometrist for recommending this wonderful practice where I know I will receive the best of care. It's no wonder their reviews are stellar!

Very good experience. Dr.Mitchell and staff are kind and knowledgeable. I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes in the waiting room. Both my husband and myself have just recently become his patients, and are very happy with our decision.

Dr. Mitchell is knowledgeable and takes good care of my eyes. I have some eye issues that he watches carefully and he keeps me from worrying. He is kind hearted and does an excellent job with cataract surgery. He gives good advice on selecting lenses (for me, it was mini mono and Vivity, turned out great!). He didn't let me take unnecessary risks so I went into surgery pretty confident. I have an eye condition that could have caused problems post-surgery but he knew exactly what to do pre-surgery so I woulded have problems. I am grateful to have a wonderful doctor who is also a nice guy.

Just moved to the area and had my first visit yesterday 5/9/23. Was referred to this practice by my new primary care doctor. Felt like the exam was very thorough by both the tech and the doctor. Great experience.

Both Dr's. Mitchell and Morin are what you want in a physician: patient, welcoming,low key and very thorough. Unlike many mds today, they make every effort to see you when you need urgent care and go the extra mile to explain things. Their staff is friendly very knowledgable, and competent.

Dr. Mitchell and his colleagues have provided excellent care for many years, including cataract surgery. He and his staff explain every step during the exam and he spends time carefully describing my situation and prognosis. I wish all my medical providers were as thorough and comprehensive as Dr. Mitchell.

Dr. Mitchell made my dreams come true! I’ve worn glasses since I was in the 3rd grade and they were so thick they gave me headaches. I have been saving all my life for corrective surgery and when I found out I wasn’t a candidate for LASIK I was heartbroken. When I found out implantable contact lenses (ICL) existed my hope was rekindled and now I can see better than I have ever seen before! Everything is so clear that I randomly stop in the middle of what I’m doing just to gaze at the world around me. I can backpack, do martial arts, scuba dive, wrestle with my 3 year old, and wake up in the morning all without having to worry about my eye wear. Dr. Mitchell was so helpful explaining the procedure, risks and benefits in a way that I could understand. He was super professional and took very good care of me before, during and after surgery. I have to travel from a long distance to see him, but it has been totally worth it!

I have had chronic eye problems since I was a child, so have seen a number of ophthalmologists. Dr. Mitchell is the best of all of them and he has been exceptional in my opinion. If not for the care of Dr. Mitchell and his staff, I probably would not be able to see well enough to work any more. As a long term patient, I have been seen by most of the technicians and both Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Morin. My visits have been both routine checkups and emergency visits when I have had problems that needed immediate care. Without fail, they have identified what needed to be done and delivered a treatment plan that worked. At one point, Dr. Mitchell referred me to a specialist for a rare condition with serious health implications. I liked that he knew his limitations and was comfortable sending me to a subject level expert. When I researched the person I was referred to, I was pleased to learn that I was being sent to one of the best in the country! I have always been treated kindly and with respect. The doctors and staff listen to what I say and give thoughtful responses. They are really the best!!!

I had the read good reviews about Dr. Mitchell. I went to him after months of eye issues due to a severe form of pink eye. I had high hopes he'd figure out what was wrong with my eyes. Instead, he spent less than 5 minutes with me, didn't do ANY examination of my eyes that an ophthalmologist should do. He just pulled down my lower eyelid, and decided I needed medication (that's incorrect, by the way! ). I was in such shock at his lack of attention and care, and his inability to hear me (ie/ you can't wear contacts, when I'm not?!!), I paid (out of pocket) and went to sit in my car to cry in frustration. A couple of days later, I called his office manager, Sandy, to request a refund because no one should have to pay for a non-examination, it's illegal. Needless to say, never heard from their office again until I followed up. They claimed to have left me a message that the doctor "feels" he did a full exam. He wouldn't offer a refund . Not only am I reporting him to the board, but I don't want anyone else to experience what I did, which is why I'm writing this review. Awful "doctor" and office. Avoid at all costs!

I had a very dense cataract due to eye damage that I experienced many years ago. My vision was all but gone in my right eye. After researching eye surgeons and finding that there are some hacks out there, I found Dr. Mitchell at the Mitchell Eye Institute in Vienna VA. All I can say is thank God I did. I immediately felt confident that I had found the best after his informative , detailed and confident manner of explaining the procedure of removing the cataract and putting in the new lens.I am writing this exactly 24 hrs after the surgery with no side effects and I cant explain , other than saying I feel like I am seeing the world in HD now ! From the staff in his office to the nurses and assistants in the surgery center it was the most professional practice I have ever seen. Dr Mitchell is in a league of his own. Dr. Mitchell is a warm and thoughtful person, and a highly skilled surgeon. He has been treating me for more than 10 years following a diagnosis for a pre-glaucoma condition and later development of cataracts. I recently had my damaged lenses removed and replaced with implants by him at the Freedom Surgical Center in Chevy Chase. I was able to enjoy the improved vision immediately. When I went on a 1000 mile trip and left my medications behind, his office sent a replacement prescription to a pharmacy near where I would be staying, so that I was able to pick up the new meds as soon as I arrived. That deserves 5 STARS!
