This was my first experience with anesthesia, and I was terrified of being rendered helpless in a room full of strangers. As if dreading this procedure (an endoscopy) for three weeks wasn't bad enough, I had to wait an extra 90 minutes for the procedure itself. The doctors and nurses saw how scared I was, but kept telling me to take deep breaths. Thanks a lot. By the time I FINALLY made it to the procedure room, I had a full-blown panic attack. The next thing I know, I'm jolting awake in the recovery room, disoriented and terrified out of my mind. I remember crying and ripping tubes and wires off - then I tried to rip out the IV. The nurses held me down, while it was removed. Nothing made sense. I didn't know what day it was or why I was there, I just wanted to run away. For the next two weeks, I couldn't swallow solid food, because of the biopsy that was taken. So much pain.... Getting answers from the office was a laugh. They were so disorganized. I don't know where these people were trained, but they obviously don't know how to treat anxious patients... or maybe they just don't care. They're so desensitized to it all. We're just bodies on their assembly line, after all. This horrific experience was four months ago, but I STILL have nightmares about running away from doctors who want to operate on me. Will it ever stop???
