DR Mithoefer is a top notch surgeon that is cutting edge. He used a new surgical technique on my knee to regenerate my own cartilage rather than replacing it. I was able to get access to this futuristic technology by being part of a study years before it is going to be available on the market. My knee is doing really well and l am so impressed with Dr. M’s skill and compassion throughout the entire process. He has my highest recommendation.

Prior to injury/surgery, I was living a very active and demanding lifestyle. I work in a physically demanding job and compete in many different martial arts as well. 10 weeks post op I was cleared to return to work and sport with virtually no limitations. Everyone's injuries are different/more severe, but I returned so soon due to my extremely strict adherence to Dr. Mithoefer's protocol, not missing a single PT appt, and potentially due to receiving a PRP injection (not cortisone). He called me the day after surgery and we had a chat about the repair, PT, pain management, and anything else I had questions about. It made me feel very cared for. I suppose I am "lucky" there weren't any unforeseen setbacks or complications. But when it comes to surgical rehab, you need to create your own luck by working hard at PT, not skipping PT appt's, being patient, and listening to one of the best medical professionals; Dr. Mithoefer. I have recommended him to my co-workers, family and friends, and will continue to do so as long as he is practicing medicine. My response to the reviews under 5-stars: I understand every case and injury is different. I was fortunate enough to be in good health prior to surgery and successfully rehab post-op. But I do think it is a bit frustrating that patients (whom most have ZERO medical experience or understanding) can under mind a top-notch surgeon who has devoted nearly their entire life to improving those same patients' quality of life, with a review that takes less than 5 minutes.

Cannot recommend this excellent doctor any more! He helped my son with a very difficult knee injury and helped him bounce back in an unbelievable way. By performing exceptional surgery and setting him up a specific therapist that was particularly skilled in his injury and surgery. My son received a full college scholarship and this would not have been posdible without Dr Mithoefer's exceptional skill, guidance and personal support during a very stressful time. I went to Mr. Mithoefer three years ago for ACL reconstruction in my knee. He came across as competent, though hurried and brief with words. The surgery went well as far as I could tell, but afterwards I continued to have pain in my knee. He said this only thing that could improve my knee was exercise. I did this and at first it did help, but after some months, the pain would to increase with exercise. Nine months after the surgery, he said there was NOTHING that could be done to improve my knee other than more exercise. I explicitly asked him this question and that was his answer. In all my appointments, his bedside manner made me feel like I was wasting his time, and the continued pain was somehow my fault. So for the next 18 months I struggled with the pain and took ibuprofen daily to help me continue to exercise. Then at a physical with my PCP I mentioned that I was struggling, and she looked at his notes from my last appointment. He had written that he'd considered give me a shot, but had decided against it. He had never mentioned this option to me. My PCP recommended I go back to discuss it with him. When I then went back to Mr. Mithoefer, he was inclined to blame some "new injury" for the pain. I assured him there was no new injury -- this is the same issue he blew off 18 months ago. He was cavalier and unconcerned once again -- terrible beside manner -- looked at the knee for a few seconds and said he would give me a cortisone shot. And once again, he was walking out the door as I was asking about what the follow up plan was. The steroid shot helped quite a bit and I was dismayed to realize that I had gone through 18 months of pain needlessly. Shortly after this, I retore my ACL. The day of the tear I sent a picture of my swollen knee to his office via email and received no reply until I was in an emergency appointment the next day and they called over to orthopedics to confer with them. The reply email wasn't even from him personally. It said I didn't need to come in for an appointment. At this point I decided to change doctors. I sent Dr. Mithoefer a final email saying I was very disappointed with the care I received from him. The long and the short of it is that if you get a correct diagnosis and a successful surgery, this doctor is great. But if you need any post-op care he is TERRIBLE. And you must endure his terrible bedside manner, lack of communication and lack of commitment to follow-up.

He took the time to answer all questions. Surgery was quick and after care has been awesome.

He appears friendly and apparently has good surgical skills. However, if there are problems or your recovery does not fit inside the box of common, un complicated recoveries, he essentially dismisses you and effectively refuses to help you, with no communication to you as the patient. I would not recommend him to anyone who wants a surgeon who cares about the patient after surgery. Extremely disappointing. Harvard Vanguard and New England Baptist should know about his terrible follow through.

Dr Mithoefer is a talented surgeon and seemed personally interested in my care. He has written numerous published articles and seems extremely knowledgeable. His office staff is great and effective.

I chose Dr. Mithoeffer to do my knee surgery after seeing 4 other surgeons all over the US first. I had heard about his special experience with joint cartilage repair in sports patients and came to visit him for an additonal opinion in Boston. What impressed me right away was that he was focusing right on the important points for my knee. He also did not badmouth the other surgeons that I had seen before, something that most of them had done. He told me I had a difficult problem and explained to me that I could choose surgery to fix the joint naturally and would have a good chance of getting back to soccer, tennis, and basketball, my favorite sports. Dr. Mithoeffer sat down with me and explained the details of the surgeries and rehabilitation. He gave me several handouts and resources to explain things as well. I was so impressed with his knowledge and approach, that I decided to cancel my surgery somewhere else and to go with him. He did a knee scope first and then a second surgery when he fixed my knee ligaments, and transplanted and new meniscus and implanted cartilage cells. This was all done with only 2 inch skin cuts and I did not have to stay in the hospital. He also used my own growth factors to help with the healing. The reghabilitation after surgery was intense but well organized and Dr. Mithoeffer set me up with a great PT. Dr. Mithoeffer called me personally several times after the surgery to check on me. The surgery was a great success. I am back playing all my sports and have absolutely no pain or limitation. I am so happy that I chose Dr. Mithoeffer. He is an exeptional surgeon. When I told a local surgeon here in Florida about my surgery he was surprised about my quick recovery and small scars. I have sent two of my friends to see Dr. Mithoeffer as well and they confirmed my overall impression of Dr. Mithoeffer as a special doctor. I will always be thankful for all his help and support

When I first went to see Dr. Mitheofer, I thought he was wonderful and would be able to help my ongoing knee issues. He performed 2 knee surgeries on me: 1- a meniscus clean up and then 2- a meniscus transplant. The meniscus transplant has not given me the relief I need and continue to have on going pain and swelling. When I call to follow up with him he is anxious to get off the phone and it takes him 1 week or more to call back. I called one month ago and still haven't gotten a response. I've since consulted with other doctors who have indicated problems with the meniscus transplant. I plan on going to another doctor who has more experience with complex knee issues. If you have a simple surgery- Dr. Mitheofer is fine, however I would consultant a specialist with complex training for more complicated joint issues.

He's a true professional in the way he speeded up my rotator cuff surgery and the surgery itself

He is cold, abrupt and has his spiel. He told me to get a MRA ( a dye injected MRI ) on my right shoulder. I just had this procedure a few weeks before this visit.He didn't bother to look at my medical records except to glance at two surgical notes from 1986 & 1988. He then said all his patients get PT, did a cursory exam and left. The whole visit took about two minutes. I think that if you are young, healthy and into sports -and have a simple repair job to be done, he's the guy for you.If you are older, have had longer standing, more complex issues, or previous surgeries he writes you off. It's ageism. I've done previous bouts of PT without any positive change in pain or function. I'm middle aged not ancient. But even if I was elderly, don't people deserve a better quality of life regardless of age?He's just plain rude, too. I was walking down the corridor, the door to his office was open and I introduced my husband to him. He glanced up and said, " I'm dictating." without any acknowledgment of us. Great. What a lousy experience..

I have nothing my praise for Dr. Mithoefer. He is an expert in natural joint repair and fixed my damaged cartilage. He gave me my knee back and my sports. I am back to playing tennis and basketball twice a week and feel great.

This doctor really cared about my problem and injury. He ordered all necessary tests like MRI without hesitation which allowed to diasgnose my problem earlier. The experience with his office staff was very supportive and helpful. Surgery was necessary and was done with small incisions (artroscopically) which allowed me to recover fast and return to my work and basketball within a few weeks. I overall really had a very positive experience
