I myself researched Dr. Schultzel for my husband who had to have a 3rd hernia surgery after the first 2 failed from a different practice. The entire process including recovery and healing, were like day and night for my husband. They are absolutely amazing from the office staff, assistants, the hospital experience and especially the doctor himself. I wish we would have found him for the first surgery. Matthew Schultzel, DO is a very caring and professional doctor. He always has the time to answer all the patients questions and makes the patient feel very at ease. He is the most compassionate doctor I have ever had and is considerate of each patients concerns. He takes on all medical problems with his patients so you feel you can achieve a positive outcome because you are not alone but working together with him to achieve an easy, as painless as possible, result. I wish I’d gone to Dr. Schutzel for my hernia surgery the first time. He is clearly the better surgeon and his actions show he cares about his patients. Instead, I went to UCSD. After the initial visit/sales pitch, I did not see my surgeon again. At each of my two post-ops, some other doctor told me the bulge would go away or it was normal. The bulge got bigger until it became undeniable that the surgeon whiffed and I would need a second surgery. I knew the odds got worse each time. I was scared. A friend referred me to Dr. Schutzel. The first visit was night-and-day different. He answered all of my questions. He explained exactly what would happen. He didn’t shy away from hard questions or explaining the risks. Dr. Schutzel visited with me and my wife right before the surgery. He visited with my wife immediately afterwards. He visited with me when I woke up. And I saw him at all three of my follow up visits. I’m completely healed and back to the active lifestyle I was scared I might lose. I would suggest you just go see Dr. Schutzel the first time.

I recently had surgery performed by Dr. Schultzel. It was a potentially painful surgery (hemorrhoids) and I have to say that I was very impressed all along the way. First off, at my initial visit, Dr. Schultzel was very communicative as well as very gentle, which was appreciated. Emily, the scheduler, really did a great job along with the rest of the staff in making sure that I had all that I needed prior to the surgery. They arranged pre-surgical testing and provide me with clear guidance. Post-surgical instructions were also excellent as was all follow-up. I'm a toxicologist so I'm not unfamiliar with medical issues. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Dr. Schultzel and don't hesitate to recommend him and his staff highly.

Unexpectedly, a bit shy of my 45th birthday, I found myself in need of a colorectal specialist. Six months later, after finding Dr. Schultzel, all is well. Below is my story. Experiencing a colloquial PIA, I first booked an appointment with my GP to figure out how to treat the symptoms. After an exam, my GP gave me two referrals for colorectal specialists. One referral, Dr Schultzel, happened to be right around the corner. Since this was Friday afternoon, their next available appointment was Wednesday so I booked it and left a bit unsure. The office was very busy and I was not very clear on the severity of my symptoms so I didn't push for something sooner. On Saturday, with pain escalating, I tucked my tail and went to the ER where I experienced one of the most painful procedures I've lived through. With 3 excellent emergency medical professionals attending to my posterior, I felt like the subject of a low budget horror film, using my hand to bite on and pretending to be tough while inside I shrieked in terror. On Monday, per discharge instructions, I booked a follow-up with the 2nd referral who was able to see me prior to my Wednesday appointment with Dr. Shultzel. I found this surgeon highly professional and thought he explained my problem well and expressed hope it would resolve on its own. One month later, with no significant improvement I went back to the 2nd referral and he agreed that it wasn't healing on its own and I would need surgery. The way it was explained, it might be one surgery or it might be two and we wouldn't really know until the first one began. I also asked on multiple occasions if a colonoscopy would be needed and this surgeon did not consider it important or necessary. At the time these two specifics didn't bother me so much, but in hindsight I think I was searching for clarity and an definitive plan for my care. At this point, since it seemed clear I was going under the knife, I re-booked Dr. Shultzel for a 2nd opinion. His office was just as crowded and busy as before which was still a noticeable contrast with my existing alternative. However, I wasn't sure accessibility really mattered that much to me anymore, this was no longer an acute problem. I also began to see this volume of activity as a positive, not only did other patients clearly trust Dr. Shultzel, but he also seemed like he was clearly getting his reps in on surgery days. What sold me on proceeding with his care was his suggestion that I get a colonoscopy done prior to any surgery, in clear contrast with his counterpart. He also seemed confident that it would take two surgeries rather than one and that I'd have to plan for that, with a period of 6-8 weeks in between. Still, it felt like a bit of a leap of faith. As a software developer, how can I properly evaluate and compare two surgeons and what if it could be one-and-done, isn't that better than two? It boiled down to a gut call, I picked Dr. Shultzel for the same reason I was sort of unimpressed in the first place, because he was super busy, so I hoped my odds of falling on the fairway would be maximized. I did consult with a family friend who convinced me that it really did not matter, any colorectal surgeon should be able to deal with my specific problem or they shouldn't be practicing at all. So, the procedures themselves, I'd almost call them pleasant even though being a slab of meat on a table and wearing the equivalent of an adult diaper probably isn't on my list of favorite things to do on any given day. The hospital staff was great both times, I was not worried one bit before, during or after. I'm healing up quite well now, roughly 2 months after my 2nd surgery. The 2nd recovery was a bit rough 2-3 days out until the first week was over and based on what I know, a single surgery would have been similar in terms of recovery. Salt baths are very helpful, and it's also best to avoid your kids when they start throwing kicks and punches for a few days. A note on Dr. Shultzel's office environment. Over the course of the last 6 months, Dr. Shultzel has changed to a new office which has more space and is less crowded. It's easier to get an appointment, and the staff is less swamped. The concerns I had on that first and second visit, they've clearly been addressed. It feels like a fairly well oiled machine now and I think I experienced some of his growing pains mid-cycle. Oh, as for the colonoscopy itself, nothing turned up of significance, just one very small polyp removed. It sure is nice to have one less thing to worry about. I think my previous apprehension about colonoscopies was more of a foolish desire to keep my innards out of prying hands. Once I got past the step of letting someone else work on those parts of my anatomy, it started seeming closer to "normal". I'd imagine this is a very male-specific apprehension. Still, I do hope that the next six months will see a significant reduction in the number of times I'm on a table with my pants removed.

Dr.Schultzel removes my colon cancer this year using the robot. I am now cancer free. He was and is still with me every step of the way during my cancer care and treatment. I saw that he just won the “top surgical oncologist award of 2019” from the American Cancer Society when I recently went to his office! They certainly chose the right guy!

Dr. Schultzel treated our mom (who is elderly and has dementia and is not an easy person to deal with) with great warmth and patience and professionalism), making her feel comfortable in the process. He took good care of her medical issues and we were very pleased and grateful for his kindness and expertise.

This Dr. and his staff will take great care of you in dealing with areas many times we neglect due to embarrassment or not being sure what is wrong. Go see him he will take good care of you and make you feel comfortable.

Dr. Schultzel is a great surgeon. He takes his time and listens to you; he answers all your questions directly, in a way you can understand and helps you make decisions. He's professional, likable, and caring. When I was in the hospital he always showed up and kept me up to date with all that was happening and told what was being planned next, and why. He's a great communicator, something I cannot always say about other doctors. And, as a bonus, he has a great medical assistant. I highly recommend him.

Dr. Schultzel was recommended to me for removal of a colon tumor. The procedure was complicated due to the size and placement but he was able to successfully remove the tumor laparoscopically and I was out of the hospital in 3 days! Dr. Schultzel and his staff takes the time to explain in detail the procedures, recovery and follow up expectations for your piece of mind and a speedy recovery. I've had multiple abdominal surgeries, and my experience with Dr Schultzel was by far the best. He is warm, attentive, caring, and most importantly, a gifted surgeon. I had to have two robotic surgeries within 6 weeks of each other, and the recovery, while painful, was seamless. His staff, especially Emily, is attentive and caring as well, and pleasure to work with. Highly recommend!!

Matthew Schultzel was a life changer. I was living in pain everyday for 8 months and Dr. Schultzel did his work and now I am pain-free. It's as if the pain was never there to begin with. On May 1, 2018, I had laparoscopic robotic surgery performed by Dr Schultzel to simultaneously repair 3 hernias. The outcome was fantastic. Very little post-op pain and limitation that abated in 2 or 3 days. No real limitations about activities after that. I found him to be caring, very professional and with an excellent staff.
