I am very happy with Dr. Movahed for pre-op, surgery, and follow-up care. You can tell he is a perfectionist, both by interacting with him and by the excellence that his staff demonstrates. The whole picture reinforces that this doctor has exceptionally high standards. And, let's be very honest, when going through this kind of surgery, YOU WANT THAT PERFECTION! The planning process incorporates some impressive technology to couple the science with his experience. While I did feel at the time like I didn't know *everything,* looking back I knew what I needed to focus on (diet, hygiene of the incisions, and rest). Its hard to relax with such a big surgery but other than those items, I say leave up to Dr. Movhed, his staff, and the amazing care team he partners with at Mercy. The post-op is tough, but normal, its just a lot of work to eat enough, keep your mouth clean, and manage the Rxs, but I did feel that I had the support I needed from post-op in Mercy and then from Movahed's office once I got home. I've healed very nicely and everything is back to normal. I have some of the expected numbness in my chin but no other negative effects. Some other reviews have mentioned that he is pricey...well I think in many cases you get what you pay for and the level of service, professionalism, and quality is something you don't want to skimp on when it comes to jaw surgery! I'm a very happy patient:)

Orthodontists and Dentists: If you refer patients to him, you are crazy and they will hate you! My husband and I are shocked he has 5 star reviews. He is nice, yes. willing to re-do surgery when he screws up, yes. But who wants a second surgery and who can take more time off work for that and how would you trust him for surgery 2 if he messed up surgery 1? He is way over-priced for the results that he delivers. Way too tone deaf and not willing to listen and consider what it is you are telling him and consider the whole patient and weigh surgical needs against everything else. (ie. when I say I work in sales and speak a lot for my work, and that smile and aesthetic are important and that I need realistic timeframes to expect to be out of work and they tell me 4 weeks and don't bother to tell me I'll have a giant plastic thing attached to roof of mouth for 12 weeks making it impossible to talk and be swollen up like a balloon and still barely able to open mouth, that's unethical or just tone deaf to what I am saying to them). I did not know about the plastic splint until I woke up from surgery!! That's just one example. There are hundreds more. For every one problem he solved medically, he created two more in its place. He reduced my turbinates (sinus bones) against all standard protocol for my situation and lack of symptoms, and 1.5 years later it still drastically negatively affects my health and req. surgery to help fix. Three ENTs have told me he should never have done that procedure on me because I was not a candidate. I went from feeling great before the surgery for prosthetic joints to feeling sub-par most days, because of this massive breech of protocol. He should lose his medical license for this. Cosmetically it was no better. He gave me the jawline of a dude, the flat face and nose of an ape, the protruding chin of a cartoon caricature and an aged appearance that I did not think was possible from oral surgery! I see good reviews on him, which begs the question - did he have students who didn't know what they were doing, performing surgery on me? Did his office assistant who I hated sabotage my surgical plan without him knowing? Did my referring Ortho get a kickback for sending me there? Perhaps the 5 star patients had more simple procedures. He isn't open to recognizing there are things that are not cookie cutter and he just straight up doesn't listen or give a straight answer on anything in regards to how this was able to happen, if he had planned it out so meticulously as he told us he did (prior to surgery). Two diff. surgeons have been able to go through all my images and records and determine what he did wrong, but he still has yet to diagnose what went wrong other than to say he should have pushed the chin back further. It baffles my husband and me how, after paying 60k for surgery, (not covered by insurance) that my results were so poor that I have to pay another 50+ just to fix the deformities and who knows how much for the turbinate/sinus error, since there is no real un-doing of that, except band-aid fixes that may not work. If William Hang is your orthodontist, do NOT take his advice on going to this guy. He swore to me that Movahed is every bit as good as Larry Wolford, but there is no substitute for years of experience. If you need joints, (or anything other than a tooth pulled) go to Wolford or CA/NY surgeons and get several opinions to see if you really do need new joints. Get four opinions. I was 46 when I had surgery and people always mistook me for 35. Now I am 48 and people think I am 58! He does not seem to understand how the constellation of features as a whole, play off each other. He doesn't have a sense of what a change to one feature will do to the whole, or to the others. I actually do not know if Dr. Movahed knew or planned for me to look so different or if he is just unable to admit that he over-rotated me counterclockwise (two surgeons have told me this by looking at my images and records) and unevenly tilted me as well. The net effect was this: 1. My chin sticks out way too far (and in addition to the other chin shape changes he caused with widening my face and a hideous metal chin plate he put in, it's just dastardly - (Think: Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade, and I'm a woman!) (And think - old ladies and cartoon caricatures whose chins jut out as far as the tip of their nose) 2. It caused a flattened appearance along my upper teeth and lip which un-did two years of progress (in prep for surgery) that my orthodontist had accomplished in giving me more curve and prominence to my teeth 3. Maxilla is too high now (not a problem prior to surgery) - the upper teeth do not show when I smile or talk! (Think old ladies with NO upper teeth and drug addicts who look like they are missing teeth from doing drugs). 4. My right profile of chin sticks out further than the left profile and the left joint protrudes further than the right one causing a concave area under it. (uneven tilting when rotating me). 5. Shortened and widened my face making me look fatter. 6. Jawline super masculine now. (Other surgeons confirmed that my airway did not need to be so large; thus, lower jaw didn't need that much movement forward, causing such a masculine jaw) Especially, because after palate advancement by the orthodontist I had NO sleep apnea! (Cookie cutter medicine. I was treated like a level 10 apnea patient regardless of MY specific symptoms and characteristics). Unethical!! 6. The maxilla movement caused DRASTIC changes to my nose shape, size, and flaring of nostrils. This was never adequately explained to me. There's a flattening effect to the bridge of my nose. 7. The fat graft from my stomach for the joints caused a fat pocket bulge and distortion of fat cells causing a giant "muffin top" I never had before. 8. concave temples (aging effect), eyes look small and unn
Dr Reza movahed saved me from a world of neck, back, arm and jaw pain. He replaced my jaw joints and brought both jaws significantly forward (17mm). I woke up 8 hours later and all of the surging pain that ran down my body every day was gone. I had very little pain from the surgery itself. Minimal numbness mostly on the chin. And I had much less swelling than expected which I couldn't believe! Aesthetically my jaw line looks 100x better and even my nose improved since he moved the top jaw forward. Dr movahed is certainly the best surgeon in the country and I owe him my life.
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Movahed and his staff. I needed new jaw joints as a result of botched jaw surgeries from many years ago. Over the years, I consulted tmj surgeons who told me they thought there was nothing that could be done for me. I am 72 years old and got to the point where I could hardly open my mouth at all. After consulting with Dr. Movahed, I felt confident that he could help me. I had recently had total jaw joint replacement surgery. He is a miracle man who cares so much about his patients. I was so scared that he could not help me, but he has given me my life back. I am opening my mouth wider than I have for 30 years. His personality is so positive and that positivity becomes contagious. His staff is outstanding. When I have a question and call, they are always helpful and answer your questions. I am so grateful that I found this wonderful, talented, caring man. He is the best!!
My name is Dr. Rachel Barnhart and I had orthognathic surgery 3.5 weeks ago by Dr. Reza Movahed. I have been continuously amazed by him and his staff. The results of my surgery were better than expected correcting my upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). I'm healing quickly with no complications and had minimal swelling and practically no bruising after surgery. Dr. Movahed and his staff hold themselves to the highest standard in delivering care. They strive for excellence and truly care for their patient's well being. This type of surgery requires detailed planning and coordination with an orthodontist and possibly a myofunctional therapist (in my case). I live in California and even with the distance I felt like I was being taken care of throughout the planning process. Dr. Movahed's surgical treatment coordinator, Jona Baldwin, was always there for me to answer questions before and after surgery and went above and beyond to help me with anything she could including information regarding my insurance and the hospital. Even while I was in the hospital recovering Dr. Movahed came to check-in on me. He always gave me the time I needed to feel heard during our visits. He is an outstanding provider who strives for perfection. He's very uplifting and has such a big heart, which makes you feel at ease. He's truly gifted in what he does and I feel his approach in treating UARS and OSA is the future. I'm a dentist myself and would recommend anyone suffering from UARS and/or OSA consider seeing him. I just can't say enough, you have to experience it for yourself, you'll be in the best of hands.
I can recommend Dr. Movahed without reservation. My 21 year old daughter had osteochondroma (bone tumor) in her jaw which caused TMJ and facial asymmetry. Correcting her condition required months or pre-op planning and coordination with an orthodontist, 9 hours of surgery performed by Dr. Movahed and months of post-op recovery which included continued coordinated treatment with the orthodontist and physical therapist. Dr. Movahed worked tirelessly to assure that my daughter achieved her best possible outcome. He was always available and easy to reach whenever we had any concerns or questions and remains so to this day, 1 1/2 years after her surgery. He is compassionate, caring and 100% dedicated to his patients. This was a very scary time for our family but Dr. Movahed patiently, pleasantly and confidently saw us through. My daughter is beautifully perfect once again.
When i met with Dr.Movahed he was very personal with me. I felt like he wanted to fix my problem and that was his main goal. Every other doctor i had been to questioned me about my diagnosis almost like they didn't believe me or I was making it up. He had taken a scan and went over it with me and detail. Since surgery I no longer have jaw pain and i can eat things i could never eat before. I am beyond thankful for him and his entire staff.
Dr. Movahed is the only Oral Surgeon in St. Louis that can perform the type of surgery I needed. I had lost almost all bone structure in both jaws along with other joint problems, had sleep apnea and airway obstructions. Dr. Movahed performed a 9+ hour surgery which was difficult considering my underlying health issues. I have scleroderma which is why the bone structure deteriorated to the point it did. I had almost no circulation in the area. I am now 6 weeks post op and the pain is less than prior to surgery. I still have months of physical therapy and braces to go through but if asked as I was by my husband would I go through everything again considering the initial pain, limitations with chewing and opening the mouth and my answer was YES! I feel better, only use oxygen during long periods of activity and the pain is less.
I had several fractures in my face resulting from a fall in Jan, 5 2016. I was originally referred to another OMS (from hospital) that misdiagnosed my breaks and said they would heal up on their own without surgery. This was of course a mistake and identified later that afternoon. The doctor even wanted to do the surgery that night around 9pm which was pretty amazing considering he just finished apologizing for the incorrect diagnosis due to fatigue, getting ready for his boards, etc...I then reached out to two independent resources that 100% referred Dr Movahed as the best in STL. His office squeezed us in on a busy Saturday morning and surgery was performed Tuesday evening. Three plates/12 screws later along with a two night hospital stay and I was on the road to recovery. The only visible stitch I had was quickly gone and friends/family were amazed at the severity of the procedure. Dr Movahed (and staff) were incredible in all aspects of interaction/treatment. This review will not convey the level of gratitude I have towards his care. Thanks again!
He takes the time to explain in detail your procedure.
