Dr. Richard Philip Holm, MD

I can't say enough wonderful things about Dr. Holm. He completed the surgery I needed on my wrist, took the time to explain the procedure, what is causing the pain, and how the procedure will eliminate/reduce the issues I was having. The surgery went smoothly! So when I was having another issue a few years later, I went back to see him. He walked in with the same adorably mismatched shoes and friendly, comfortable demeanor, explained what was creating the issue, what would be done, and how it should eliminate my pain, return the sensation to my fingers, and enable me to rebuild my hand strength. When I asked him if I could play bass (guitar) afterwards, he said I should feel relief soon and heal over time, so yeah, I should be able to play bass in no time. Such a relief because I can't play bass now! :D (And yes, he had the courtesy to smile at the joke even though it's outdated) I'm hopeful about the upcoming surgery this week and know I am in good hands! And I am excited to return to learning guitar and bass which I am told is actually really good therapy!

I work with Dr Holm everyday and have worked in multiple hospitals in the Chicago area as well as Wisconsin. He is by far the best skilled orthopedic surgeon I have ever seen. I wouod recommend him to anyone for knee/hip replacement or revision.

I had my first knee replacement in 2006. No problem until about 10 years ago, I started to have burning (Knee heating up), stiffness and pain. I walk worst now than I did before the replacement. I went back about 4 yrs after the replacement of the knee and was told that I needed to craw.

He tells you, as it is, and takes proper action.

I was sent to Dr. Holm by my primary Dr. as I was in trouble. I had a ladder accident and blew out my ankle and also broke my leg. My local Hospital was unable to treat me and sent me to another Hospital. I laid in a bed there for 5 days, before I was operated on at midnight. The reason for delay, was that the swelling had to go down, but leg was never elevated or ice applied prior to operation. After release, I paid weekly visits for a check up. I told them, I was in pain, and was told to keep walking, and the pain will go away. They removed the plaster cast at one point, and put a fiberglass cast back on. My incisions were draining, but the nurse that applied the cast, just put a gauze sleeve and then applied the cast. A couple of days later, my leg had swollen and I was in great pain. I called and told them, I was having a problem. Their main office was in Colonial Heights, Va. I was told I would have to go to Hopewell, VA, to be seen. There a young girl, not even sure if nurse or not, removed the cast. The gauze sleeve was stuck solid to my incisions. She actually pulled the gauze away, with a plug of meat. My wife witnessed this, and said she could see bone. They applied a bandage, then put me into one of those walking boots, and sent me home. A few days later, I had yellow fluid running into the boot. I went to Colonial Heights again, on a Monday, and told them that I must have an infection as fluid is running down my leg etc. The reception desk woman told me that since I didn't have an appointment, I couldn't see a Dr. until Friday. I told them what they could do with the whole place, and left. I came back to my Primary Dr. and he started treatment for the obvious infection, then set up an appointment with Dr. Holm. On my first contact with Dr. Holm, he told me, there was a chance, I could lose my leg, and set me up, for surgery. He fused my ankle and removed the plates and screws, the other surgeon had put in my leg. One plate had broke. Also had to trim my leg bone as it would never have knitted, as bone ends were like oatmeal. He also inserted a rod inside of leg bone. Things progressed nicely, during checkups. Later rod was removed. During later check up, it was discovered the ankle fusion had parted. Went back to surgery and ankle was refused and another rod was inserted thru the ankle in to leg bone. No problems for about 2 years now. A recent MRI shows a problem in my lower spine, that may need surgery, My Primary Dr. wants me to go to a Specialist, in Colonial Heights or Petersburg. I asked him to see if Dr. Holm is experienced with this particular problem, if so, I would prefer him, as he has my complete trust etc. I prefer a Doctor that tells you as it is, in the beginning. I know things can show up during a surgery, that can completely change the out come. In any case, I know Dr. Holm would do his best, for me.

Left knee replaced 8 months ago, no problems and no pain. Was in hospital one day and one night. Out of work one week (I have a mostly sit down job). Right knee replacement was five months ago with the same result, no problems no pain. I came home the same day after morning surgery. Again only missed one week of work. I was a little apprehensive before the first replacement (because of the stories you hear) but I knew I must do something if I wanted to keep walking. I actually looked forward to the second replacement because of two reasons. First, the results of the initial replacement were out standing. Second because of the great specialty staff at the hospital. Dr. R. Holm is a impressive very skilled surgeon, but more than that I appreciate him as a man of integrity. He went out of his way to meet my special needs, kept his word, and spent all the time needed plus more to answer questions and help me. While I was prepared before both operations. Having built up my muscles and blood ahead of time. I was also willing to do and did everything he said would make the recovery go better. Doc does know best!

Nothing but good to say about Dr R Holm

Yes, I generally have to wait to be seen, but it is worth it. Dr. Holm never rushes you and makes sure you understand everything there is to know about your situation. This just takes time, if you come loaded with a lot of questions, he answers them all without making you feel you are taking more of his time than you should. For joints, there isn't any other doctor to go to as far as I am concerned, he is #1

In my opinion he needs to be professional and stop thinking about how many joint replacements he can do in a year.

He needs to forget about making money and start thinking about his patients and their family.
