Dr. Robert Brian Wesner, MD

Dr. Wesner is an excellent psychiatrist. He spends a great deal of time with his patients, is very knowledgeable about medications and returns phone calls the same day. Dr. Wesner is a very kind and compassionate person. He also has an adorable chocolate and yellow lab who sit in on his appointments.

Dr. Wesner has been my psychiatrist for years. He worked a very tough case of depression into remission, and I've continued to go to him for maintenance appointments even though I've since moved. Throughout my time in his care, he has demonstrated extreme skill in selecting and explaining treatment options. Maybe more importantly, his empathy and calm, friendly demeanor in each session makes me feel like I'm more in the care of a friend than a doctor. Couldn't have asked for a better psychiatrist for treating my mental illness.

I've been a patient for over six years now, and I can honestly say that I've never had an experience with a health provider that's been as rewarding as I've had with Dr. Wesner. Dr. Wesner and his Office Manager, Bonnie (who is awesome), are dedicated to providing the best care possible. They're flexible and accommodating with scheduling, and they're quick to follow up when things like prescription refills/questions arise. I started seeing Dr. Wesner at a very tumultuous time in my life six years ago, and with his guidance I was able to make real progress and heal. To pass the furniture test a doctor must have chairs that put you both at the same level. Dr. Wesner also has a table that makes you feel you are working together and that defines a safe amount of space between Doc and patient. Dr. Wesner listens to all kinds of things and hears me and reads me. He doesn't just have a checklist for symptoms. He thinks things through and has surprising amounts of knowledge to reference. He is respectful. He always has another idea to try when the last one isn't the best. He understands complex interactions between various types of personal and mental and social situations. He has good ideas. He's a good guy to talk to -- to talk things over -- and he shakes your hand when you leave.

I've been going to Dr. Wesner for about a decade now for OCD. I had gone to one other "mental health counselor" for a few sessions before that, and she was not helpful at all, brushing it off as "nervousness and stress." Dr. Wesner has been so helpful, and I can honestly say he's helped turn my life around! He knows the medical part of OCD, and how to control it with medicine, and he also understands the human part of it very well. He has been so non-judgmental, hopeful, yet realistic. He understands the social stigma of a mental illness and the effects it has on family relationships. In fact, it's great that his office is in a regular building downtown, not marked as "psychiatrist" on the outside- nobody would suspect that you're going to a shrink if they saw you walk into the building! When I first came to him a decade ago, I felt like OCD was controlling my life, and now it's a very small part of life, in thanks to him. Thanks, Dr. W!

Very relaxed environment, best psychiatrist I've ever visited. Treats me as an equal participant in treatment decisions and takes the time to explain everything. Very disappointed that other doctors' offices don't have dogs, since I look forward to seeing them every time I have an appointment!

Not just an excellent doctor but a warm, caring person.

I have been seeing Dr. Wesner for the past 3 1/2 years after developing clinical depression due to a highly toxic work environment (a job I held for almost 19 years). After beginning treatment I was diagnosed with PTSD after witnessing a near death accident 12 years earlier, childhood abuse via whippings/beatings by my father, and a sexual assault at the age of 20 (I was drugged at a bar and have no memory until I woke up the next morning and realized what had happened the night before) for reference I was in my mid 40s when I finally saw Dr. Wesner. I was initially very reluctant to seek help (and was embarrassed to admit to myself that I needed help), but once I hit bottom I realized that I had to do something and finally came to see Dr. Wesner on the advice of a friend (who was previously a patient of Dr. Wesner’s). From the very start Dr. Wesner was very open, honest, and forthright with me regarding my diagnoses and treatment options. He’s an extremely good listener, and always has very thoughtful insight into the things we discuss during my sessions. During some of my more difficult episodes, he even called me at home just to check up on me and make sure that I was doing OK. That personal touch I feel is above and beyond, but is much appreciated by me to know that my doctor really does care about my well-being. I was also reluctant to use medication to manage my conditions. However, I wish I would’ve sought help much, much sooner. While it took a little while to find the correct medications and dosages it’s almost unbelievable how different I feel these days. If how I feel now is how most people normally feel, I’m ashamed to admit that I was “sick” since I was a teenager and never sought help for how I was feeling. I would recommend Dr. Wesner without reservation to anyone who is seeking treatment for mental health condition. His office is in a convenient location in downtown Iowa City. His office manager Bonnie is a wonderful person and is always diligent about following up with appointment reminders, phone calls, and messages to Dr. Wesner. In addition, Dr. Wesner has two wonderful Labrador Retriever’s (named Story and Kaye) who always greet me with kindness, sit in on all my sessions, and have a remarkable calming effect on me (and I imagine many others) during our treatment sessions. I most likely would not be here today writing this review without Dr. Wesner‘s help. He is a literal lifesaver. So if you are hesitating to seek treatment, please don’t wait. Dr. Wesner is a board-certified psychiatrist with many, many years of experience treating all manner of patients and conditions. He can and WILL help you if you take that first step and contact his office.

Dr. Wesner is a rarity in todays profit focused healthcare world. Dr. Wesner is an expert in his field and stays up-to-date and knowledgeable about new advances in medicine. He not only diagnoses and treats the condition, but cares about the individual as a whole. He has personally gone above and beyond anything I could have ever expected to ensure that the best treatment for my condition was approved by my insurance, which required completely exhausting the appeal process. I would highly recommend Dr. Wesner to anyone seeking quality healthcare.

I have a neurological condition called Post Chemotherapy Cognitive Impairment, resulting from a bone marrow transplant I had many years ago. The onset of chemo brain symptoms was gradual, and exponentially and adversely affected my personal, social, and professional life. This caused me increasing distress and anxiety, making daily functioning really hard. Dr. Wesner guided me through methods for addressing these symptoms, thorough interviews, suggestions, arranging for cognitive functioning tests. He is straight shooting, really hears what I am saying, and gives me excellent insights on rethinking how I had been viewing myself. I never feel rushed. I appreciate his professionalism. He's good and has awesome dogs!
