Dr McKelway has been seeing my mother for 20 years or more and has her doing very well! Thank you Dr. McKelway!!

My family member is using this doctor and he is getting worse and the doctor would not meet with us to get the whole picture. He thinks seeing his patient in the office is sufficient to access the whole situation. It’s got so bad that we are sereosly concern about his well being

Dr.Mckelway has been my Dr for over 3 years. He has been a blessing to my life helping bring the mental help as I received spiritual help through the Lord. He is to the point, and honest but caring to my specific mental health needs. I also appreciate his receptionist Mary whom has done everything she is able to help as well.

#1 - the secretary is rude. #2 - he WAY overmedicates. #3 - refused to refill my prescription because I owed him money, knowing full well he put me on a medication that is nearly impossible to come off of cold turkey. I tried to come off of it and I felt horrible and I was incapable of doing anything. Ended up having to call my GP and beg him to please fill the script.

I have never seen him personally, but have been in his office watching his office staff interact, and they seem to hide behind the glass doors, not cordial with the patients like they are going to get infected with mental problems if they even LOOK at you. Very weird.

Quiet mannered does not offer real help. Zero followup and ZERO therapy. If you have a problem you had better go somewhere where you can have a real psychologist share real life assistance. If you just want pills, he's your man. He is a joke.

Had never had luck with psychiatric care before. Dr. Mckelway is very knowledgeable and has finally led me to an accurate diagnosis and treatment that helps. I have been with him more than a year and he has seen me throughout my worst and is getting me back the light. Very intelligent and insightful; however is very easy to communicate with and understand even the most complex problems. I have been rhrough rough spots, but he has never made me feel bad, just helped me fix it or gave solid advice.

I was referred to Dr. Mckelway by my GP when I needed to change anti-depressants. My experience with him was simply awful; He was curt and patronizing, and when I struggled to answer questions from the clipboard he barely looked up from, he became visibly irritated. He was clearly all about the medication. Why would a doctor so clearly lacking in interpersonal skills specialize in the field of psychiatry?

I have been seeing Russ for 12-14 years. I have come to know him not only as my Doctor, but also as a personal advisor. His relaxed manner, listening skills, and his sincere and sympathetic approach to any problems, or concerns, which I have experienced in the past are addressed in our meetings. His focus on my personal issues have helped me through the roughest of times. Dr. McKelway is always available if the need arises. My only concern at this time is because I have moved approximately 200 miles away recently. I have come to depend on Russ as my main physician. This leaves me with a few decisions... 1) to drive back to Winchester for my appointments. 2) attempt to handle a few by phone. 3) or maybe use Skype as a way to interact personally, or 4) find another doctor of his caliber in the city I live now. I have not decided which way to handle this decision. I highly recommend Dr. McKelway to anyone who needs to get a handle on any issues which they are concerned with. Russ is the best I have found and I have come to consider him, not only as my physician, but as a friend. He's the guy to see in Winchester, Va. There's none better.

Condescending attitude, arrogant, does not listen just to list a few negatives of my experience over the year and a half I saw this doctor. Dispenses medications like candy and is not up-to-date on certain illnesses.

I just started seeing Dr. Mckelway a few months ago as my depression was over the top. I had been with another doctor for over 15 years when he moved. My meds were no longer working after so many years on them. Dr. Mckelway has put me on the right track. I find him very caring and a true professional. So happy that I found him.

I began seeing Dr. McKelway after a suicide attempt. I found him to be compassionate and truly interested in helping me get back on the right path. He diagnosed me as type 2 Bi-Polar and began a medication regime to stabilize me. Many changes were made to my meds over the next 2 years as we worked to find the correct combination to minimize the manic and depressive extremes. As any one with Bi-Polar will tell you the ups and downs don't ever stop you just do your best to minimize the severity. I continued to see Dr. McKelway for another 4 years before a change in my location precluded me from being able to see him. I can honestly say that I would not be living today if it weren't for Dr. McKelway.

I sought his help after several failed attempts to titrate off Valium. I have PTSD and late stage cancer, in remission. I take full responsibility for my inability to "get off" the Valium. I am on 20 mg per day now, down from almost 40 mg per day. This was accomplished using a slow taper, called the "Ashton Protocol." When I phoned Dr. M, I was at a low point, felt, and was failing at this crucial task. I do not drink, so this was not a complication. He asked me how many tablets I had left at present, I told him I had seven. He said I should break them in half, they were five mg strength, and get off the Valium. This was shocking to me, as I knew it to be medically dangerous. I did ask him for a referral, he simply put down the phone, ending our conversation.

He never remembers me, and I've been going to him for over 13 years. He always asks the same questions, and spends more time pounding out notes on his keyboard than actually talking to his patients. It wasn't always like this, but I agree with the other bad reviews...avoid this doctor his attitude sucks, as does his psychiatry skills.

He should not be treating mental health patients. They do not answer phone calls or return calls. His manner is cold and curt. A missed appointment due to illness is cause for dismissal of services. I do not recommend him at all.

His staff is rude and unhelpful. His secretary talks in a patronizing tone, like you'd talk to a child. He is very arrogant, with no real concern for his patients. If you want a doctor who does not care about your health at all, see Dr. Mckelway. If you want a doctor who cares, go elsewhere.
