I have been seeing Dr. Stephen Schmidt at the Des Peres (and more recently) the St. Peter's locations for well over a decade for an assortment of pain-related issues. Not once have I ever experienced the negative experiences shown throughout this forum - not once. If I could, I would dearly love to have him as my Primary Care Physician because of the manner in which he cares (and cared) about my situations. In my opinion, all any Doctor can do is "try" to match up what works with the malady presented. Sometimes "things" simply are beyond effective treatment. I trust this Doctor implicitly and highly recommend him. Staff issues are another matter and most probably should be reported separately; however this forum does not provide for that separation.

My wife went in today to be seen by Dr. Schmidt. Ms. Abernathy was rude and disrespectful to my wife.

First time appointment and was totally appalled by his lack of compassion. He hadn't even read over the paperwork that I had taken the time to fill out before my appointment to know what I was dealing with. I even gave him a printed article from the Journal of Nephrology to read on my diagnosis and he looked at the paper and said to me "What do you want me to do with this? This doesn't help me?" Well, if you would READ it maybe you would understand what I'm struggling with? Asked me questions that really didn't pertain to what I was there for and told me I should go to a University physician instead of the small town doctors I was dealing with. Been there, done that and they weren't any better. For those reading this comment, I highly recommend you locating a different pain management doctor who doesn't treat you like scum.

Dr Schmidt was arrogant and uncompassionate from my first visit. He was terrible at explaining my condition or a treatment plan, terrible. If you are looking for a doctor who will explain your condition and option and who cares-DO NOT GO TO HIM!!!

Dr. Schmidt is the best pain doctor I've ever had treat me. I can tell him where my pain is and he knows exactly where to go and what to do. When I first started seeing him for pain management, I was taking 2 7./325 percoset 4 times a day. I now take only 4 a day instead of 8. This doctor is brilliant when it comes to managing pain.

Shows no bed side manner. Obviously in it just for the money. Does not explain options for care. Not caring.

He is so arrogant and, I cried because so upset and felt so awkward with him and he just stared at me. He doesn't care about patients just making money. Some office staff person told me that he doesn't do follow ups he wants you to see his nurse practitioner who is a female Hitler and has no business being in this field of work. She's so strange. Dr Schmidt just wants to do procedures but I would never let him do anything to my back. Please find another pain doctor there are good ones out there.

He seems much more concerned with making money than treating people.

I drove over a hundred miles and had procedures cancelled because I licked one time on a peppermint stick in his waiting room before my appointment. The Dr. never even talked to me. His ( so called nursing staff) were very rude and were dress very unprofessional. If I find out he charged Medicare I will turn him in for fraud, It was ok for me to drink water to take my medication, but not to lick one time on a candy cane so my breath would not be so foul smelling, He showed how he uses bad judgment, I definitely would not trust him to. Put a needle in my spine, by the way Zi am an old hospital nurse of 30 years,

He entered the room, crossed his arms and said "WHY ARE YOU HERE TODAY?" while standing over me assertively. Very uncomfortable. He did not read the paperwork his office asked me to fill out before entering the room. He didn't even LOOK at my history on the Mercy Network. He doubted everything I said (all could be proven with records he could look up or read if he had taken the time). Office staff interrupted my appointment to rush him to the next appointment. The most awful narcissistic doctor I have ever encountered. Ever.

Dr Schmidt takes time to get to know. I trust him to give me excellent epidurals for my long term back pain.

Dr. Schimdt is awesome. He hits the pain spot every time. The injection lasts about 5 months.

This guy is a jerk,very rude. I do not think he looked at my Mir.He did not care that I was in pain. Did not what to help me.

He is hateful,.. would not even look at records, Please don't go to this man. Cancel your appointment and find someone else.

I have been treated by Dr. Schmidt on multiple occasions for a hip joint that is at times intolerable. He listens - he advises and he provides relief. What more can be said for and of any doctor? As for the office staff I have found that the telephone "answerers" need some remedial training in dealing with people in pain. Abruptness and the like need not be included. The wait times are out of whack with appointment schedules. The nurses and practioners who administer to the paitents in my opinion have been outstanding and pleasant to deal with. No follow ups have been experienced that have been initiated by the doctor or staff.

My wife suffers from Chronic Pain Syndrome. We recently moved here from Minnesota, and are seeking a new doctor to manage her pain. It took us over a month to get in to see this doctor because we had to wait until he was able to "review her prior medical records" that we had sent to his office. We waited about 45 minutes to be seen. We asked his assistant how long it would be before he came into the exam room, and his response was "well, he has to be at a meeting in 30 minutes, so he's in a big rush." Dr. Schmidt argued with my wife's description of when her pain was at it's worst. He complained that her medical records were too thick and said, "I'm not going to read all of that." He did not even listen to her lung sounds which is required for Medicare reimbursement. No physical exam of any kind was done. My wife and I are both retired nurses. My background is in Hospice and Palliative Care. This guy is a disgrace.
