Dr. Stephen Samuel Matter

He used my mother as a Guinea pig to try a new Hep C treatment. She would have survived had she had a transplant BEFORE the treatments. Every other gastro doctor in the country knew a patient needed 15% functioning liver before the treatment, my mother was less than 5% (according to Matter) but he encouraged her to start treatment anyway. The treatments did work but destroyed what was left of her liver. When she started getting sick as a result, we asked for her to be transferred to University of Chicago. He told us they wouldn’t take her so she suffered several more days in BroMenn ER at his hands. Finally we called the U of Chicago ourselves, it turned out that he lied, they said they would definitely take her and didn’t know why he would refuse. But by that time, it was too late. She died shortly after getting there.

I felt completely at ease throughout the entire procedure. I felt as if I really mattered.

The Dr. and staff are so nice, they are concerned about every need you could ever have. Following up on all procedures, and the level of comfort and professionalism is amazing.

I had nothing but great service from the moment I walked into the door until I was discharge. Place was clean and the staff was very professional. Dr. Matter had a great bedside presence. He answered all my questions and I did not feel rushed. During the prep I felt very nauseous and he called be back personally. I would go no where else.

Beside manner is atrocious. Cold as a fish. Totally misdiagnosed my daughters gall bladder condition. Thank goodness for her family doctor who made the correct diagnoses. I only continue to have him perform my colonoscopy because visit was complete. I regret that decision. He has the gall for another office visit to simply obtain colonoscopy results. Money, money, money, is all he is about. Will never use again and I recommend you do not either.

When I started giving true info (rather than vague estimates and responses of "I'm fine" when he asked how I was doing) he went from good doctor to great doctor. I had to be reminded that he only sees me occasionally -- he won't know if I'm feeling "off," tired, having problems, etc. unless I TELL him. I think he's great, and he never acts as if he's in a hurry to get to the next patient.
